I want to put something in front of you, dear Christian. We should be careful what we read, watch, and listen to. We should always be asking ourselves – does this glorify God? Will this be a stumbling block for me in the future?
I’m going to preface this next part by saying I’ve never read Sarah J. Mass’ books and this isn’t directed specific at the ACOTAR series and everything I’m about to say can go for many other books *but* I’ve been seeing ACOTAR on my feed a lot in the past couple of weeks, so it’s getting my attention.
I’ve heard that the ACOTAR series is full of smut. If that is true, it makes me wonder why I’m seeing so many Christians reading her books. Am I missing something? Granted, I’ve seen some people saying that they’re skipping or whiting out the smut, but I can’t help but think that if we’re going through the effort to white out smut, then maybe we need to pick up a different book.
I keep thinking of 1 Cor. 10:31. Does it glorify God to be reading these books that have such a big thread of smut? Again, I haven’t read them, so I don’t know for sure what’s in them. But if the books are explicit enough that we need to white out sections of the book, then maybe we should focus our energy on buying/reading/supporting fantasy books written by Christians that don’t have explicit themes. What we feed our minds is important. That’s why our pastors stress reading the Word so much. We shouldn’t undo our hard work in modeling ourselves after Christ by reading books that have smut (or other anti-biblical stuff) in them.
